Curriculum

Our hybrid training (face-to-face and online) will review the knowledge and practice the skills that workshop participants need to pass the RID CDI Knowledge (written) Exam. This training is designed in part based on the National Consortium of Interpreter Education Centers (NCIEC)'s Deaf Interpreting curriculum which was collaboratively developed by a team of top CDIs in the country.

The NCIEC DI curriculum covers six modules:

  1. Deaf Interpreters—Past, Present, & Future

  2. Ethnic & Cultural Diversity within the Deaf Community

  3. Consumer Assessment—Identifying Culture, Language, and Communication Styles

  4. Ethical Considerations and Challenges for Deaf Interpreters

  5. Interpreting Theory & Practice for Deaf Interpreters

  6. Deaf/Hearing & Deaf/Deaf Interpreter Teams

In addition to the curriculum materials above, Brenda Schertz and Rupert Dubler have developed the following:

  1. ASL translations of select readings (online)

  2. Hands-on practice opportunities (face-to-face)

  3. Instruction to prepare workshop participants to take and pass the RID Knowledge (written) Exam (face-to-face)
